General Facts
  • Established in April 2003 Focus on iThemba is an accredited non-profit, public benefit (18a) organisation, which aims to restore hope in people’s lives.
  • The organisation was born out of a vision of Danie van den Heever, Founder of Focus on the Family Africa, and his wife Judy as a local response to the devastating HIV/AIDS pandemic.
  • Danie is currently the Executive Chairman, leading Focus on iThemba in conjunction with the Board of Directors, together with a dedicated management team and volunteers.
  • Focus on iThemba opened its first foster care home in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal in January 2006. This first home, Joseph House, was named after Joseph of Arimathea.
  • This is part of a vision, which will see the establishment of 20 cluster foster care homes on the property.
  • Each home will have six children, and be part of a family unit with a committed married couple as mom and dad. Currently there are four homes running; Joseph House, Anna House and Joshua House and Jacob House.
  • In the United States, iThemba has a fundraising organisation 501(c)3 entitled Friends of iThemba
  • The property was previously known as the All Africa Bible College. The WinShape foundation together with friends from various parts of the world enabled us to purchase this 40 acre property and kick start the iThemba Homes (Cluster Foster Care Houses).
  • iThemba work closely with the Department of Social Welfare, who places our children in our homes.
  • The iThemba Academy opened its doors at the beginning of 2008 and aims to offer holistic education to the iThemba children and children from the Embo/Hillcrest communities.
  • iThemba actively engages with the local community in terms of sharing knowledge and skills
  • Annually iThemba welcomes friends from the USA to the campus through the Vision Africa conference which allows visitors the opportunity to ‘experience the hope’ and positive contribution that the organisation makes on a daily basis.
